There are some exciting poetry and art events taking place this summer in Edinburgh and across Scotland.
John Lapraik’s Muirkirk Heritage runs in Ayr from the 6th to 8th, which provides a full weekend of petic activities featuring Rab Wilson, Hugh Mitchell, Mark Gilroy, Johnny Templeton, and music from Bletherskyte.
On the 7th, Through an Exile Lens – Thoughts and Imaginings of Tibet takes place, which is a poetry reading of the work of Tenzin Tsundue at The Filmhouse – bound to be a sell out.
Thursday 12th in Glasgow sees the Launch of Cleave: New Writing by Women in Scotland, a new anthology edited by Sharon Blackie of Two Ravens Press. Cleave is a compilation of short fiction, non-fiction, and poetry by women – both established and newcomers – who live in or otherwise “belong to” Scotland. Readings on the night will be from Regi Claire, Linda Cracknell, Margaret Elphinstone, Anne Macleod, Pauline Prior-Pitt, Gerda Stevenson, and Sharon Blackie.
Perhaps the highlight of the month will be the return of the Old Town Festival in Edinburgh.
Events this year include a free poetry reading for the public at the Poems Aloud: Edinburgh Share on the 18th, and later on the same day, Endangered Speeches with Saadi Youssef & Valerie Gillies, presented by PEN and the National Library of Scotland.
On Sunday 22nd, Scottish PEN and Artists in Exile Glasgow have once again teamed up to present a unique translation event in which members of the refugee/asylum seeking community have worked with members of Scottish PEN on translations of each other’s work to celebrate the theme Friendship Across Borders.

Sure to be a highlight within the Edinburgh art community is the long awaited College Degree exhibition from popular local artist, Trevor Jones.
His work covering the last six years of his art college life will be on display at the Edinburgh College of Art between 14th and 24th June (Mon to Thu: 10am – 8pm; Fri to Sun: 10am – 5pm).
