Vox In The Box Poetry Slam Moves To Edinburgh’s West End
Performance poetry is coming to Edinburgh’s West End in the shape of a new regular poetry slam evening. One night a month from February, the Mercat Bar will be the home of musicians and performing poets from around the UK and beyond, offering a mixture of gigs, readings, and poetry slam competitions.
Hosted by Kevin Cadwallender and Anita Govan, Vox In The Box will showcase on the 1st Thursday of every month at 8pm, starting on the 7th February with an individual poetry slam.
The timetable of events is:
7th February – Individual Slam
6th March – Gig TBC
3rd April – Prose Slam
1st May – Gig TBC
5th June – Team Slam
3rd July – Gig TBC
BREAK (Aug & Sept)
2nd Oct – Over 50s Slam
6th Nov – Sotto Vox (The Quiet Slam)
4th Dec – Youth Slam
18th Dec – VoxBoxXmas (Special Delivery)

Aye Write! Fiction Prize To Be Permanent Award
A new national prize for Scottish fiction was premiered at Glasgow’s annual literary festival, Aye Write! this week. The Clare Maclean Prize for Scottish Fiction is dedicated to the memory of Professor Mike Gonzalez of the University of Glasgow, and offers Scottish writers the chance to win a top prize of £3000 for the best published book of the year. The award is to be a permanent fixture at the festival, with a glamorous award ceremony planned to mark the annual announcement at the culmination of the festival.
Up for this year’s inaugural prize are: Old Men in Love by Alasdair Gray, Girl Meets Boy by Ali Smith, Gold by Dan Rhodes, The Steep Approach to Garbadale by Iain Banks, The Devil’s Footprints by John Burnside, and Day by AL Kennedy.
The winner will be announced on 15th March.
